Getting the fit right on a men's kurta

Shoulders, length, sleeves and the jacket on top. The small details that make a kurta look made for you.

A white kurta shown straight on: band collar, button placket, shoulder seams and full-length sleeves

Most men own a kurta that's almost right. Slightly too long, a bit tight across the back when they sit down, sleeves that cover half the hand. Fit is the difference between looking dressed up and looking dressed by your mum.

Shoulders first

The shoulder seam should sit on the edge of your shoulder. If it drops down your arm, the kurta is too big, and no amount of tailoring fixes shoulders cheaply.

You will be sitting on the floor. Plan for it.

Choose your length on purpose

  • Knee length is classic. Right for weddings, Eid and anything formal.
  • Mid-thigh is modern and easier with straight trousers or jeans.
  • Below the knee works for a sherwani-style look, but only if you're tall.

Whatever you pick, the side slits should open cleanly when you walk, not pull.

Sleeves and chest

Sleeves should end at the wrist bone, so a watch or kara still shows. Across the chest, you want room to sit cross-legged on the floor without the buttons straining. You will be sitting on the floor. Plan for it.

What goes underneath

  • Churidar for a traditional, fitted line.
  • Pajama for comfort at long events.
  • Straight trousers for a cleaner, modern look.

Match the formality. A raw silk kurta with joggers is a choice, and not a good one.

The jacket on top

A Nehru jacket should be fitted, finish at the hip, and sit flat when buttoned. Wear it open over a busy kurta, buttoned over a plain one. A patterned jacket on a solid kurta is the easiest way to look put together.

Buying from another member

Sizes vary wildly between brands. Before you buy, message the seller for flat measurements: chest from armpit to armpit, length from shoulder to hem, and sleeve length. Compare them with a kurta you already love. It takes two minutes and saves a return.
